Heart & Lung
Transplant Trust (Vic) Inc. ABRN
A0037327C
Issue No 48. I 't Quarter - Jan, Feb,
Mar 2007.
Trans-planted-with delight!!
We have a bit of a reputation to keep
up with as regards the weather for the
Trust BBQs. The dawning of April 1st,
2007 looked as if our reputation was
about to be irreparably tarnished!
But no-it was, after a11, April Fool's
Day, and the weather gods, in their cups
no doubt, had seen fit to play a joke on
us poor mortals!
As the day lengthened and 11.30 a.m.
drew nearer the skies lightened and Lo!
Shone the sun!!
Attendance picked up slowly, but
although when cooking started and those
enticing aromas started to drift across
the Park there were fewer than SO of us
gathered there, I think the smell of
snags, onions and hamburgers must have
been magnetic, because the next time I
counted, forty odd more people had
joined us!!
We were graced by the presence of a few
'wardies' who were able bodied enough to
brave the great outdoors-always a good
thing to see. We were also glad to see
super-Sue turn up. Liaison with hospital
staff is an important part of the
Trust's input to the 'system', and the
Clinic Nurses are worth their weight in
gold to us all.
As eating slowed and conversations began
in earnest mainly talk of medications,
operation dates, and how good life is-
it was time for our popular raffles to
begin. As usual there were disappointed
punters and happy ones, and also as
usual some lucky people went away with a
swag whilst others (sigh!) went away
empty handed-such is life.
A set of fresh-water pearls caught my
eye, as did the bumper-sized Choccy
Easter Egg. I'd like to have won that! !
There's always the next BBQ, I consoled
myself with that thought at the end of
another-we hope successful BBQ. |

Details (ABRN A0037327C) The
Circulator is the Trusts newsletter,
designed for all pre-and post-transplant
patients and their families (or care
persons) and friends in Australia, New
Zealand, and overseas. It tries to
provide comment and articles on topics
of interest concerning transplant
matters, and on related areas such as
current developments in science, drugs,
treatment methods, etc, and Alfred
Hospital matters, inasmuch as they
relate specifically to transplantation.
We are also concerned with post
transplant activities social and
fundraising events mainly in support
of our Transplant Clinic (3 F). To this
end some hospital staff members are
always associated with the Committee of
the Trust, to ensure a close liaison
between the Hospital and the Trust.
Any subscriber may be a member of the
Committee. An Annual General meeting is
held in November each year, to elect
Office-bearers, and co-opt new/old
committee members. Committee Meetings
are held every two-month, in the Ward 5
E Seminar Room.
Meetings are attended on either a casual
basis, or regularly. Previous Committee
members are also welcome to return at
any time. All help offered is welcome.

KIDNEY HEALTH AUSTRALIA
This is a information sheet from the
Kidney Health Australia
to give us an insight into their
procedures and a basic view of their
overall position. Like us they are
continually asking people to sign up as
donors, I thought it might be of
interest to some of our members.
About Kidney Health Australia
Kidney Health Australia
is the peak body for the promotion of
kidney and urinary tract health in
Australia. Our focus is to improve
kidney health outcomes leading to
substantial improvements to the quality
of life for people with kidney and
urinary tract diseases and their
families and carers, whilst also
developing initiatives that reduce the
incidence of kidney disease in the
Australian community.
Kidney Health Australia
actively encourages Australians to
become organ donors. Kidney Health
Australia does not handle organ and
tissue donation registration nor their
retrieval and transplantation - all
enquiries regarding the donation of
organs and tissues are referred to
either the Australian Organ
Donor Registry or the
relevant state organ donation agencies.
Kidney transplants
Kidney transplants come from living or
deceased donors. Kidney transplants are
very successful - over 94% of
transplants are working one year later.
The average wait for a deceased donor
kidney is about four years, although
waits of up to seven years are not
uncommon.
Fast Facts about Kidney
Transplantation
As at 31 December 2005, 16% of the
8528 people receiving dialysis treatment
were on the transplant waiting list
The majority of people on the
waiting list are aged less than 55 years
and 81 % are waiting for their first
transplant
Compared to international figures,
Australia has a low deceased organ
donation rate of 10 donors per million
population in 2005
Live kidney donations represent
approximately 39% of all kidney
transplants
Why become an organ
donor`.'
Anyone can choose to be an organ or
tissue donor. One donor can save or
improve the lives of up to ten people.
There are currently about 1800
Australians waiting for a live-saving
organ transplant. On average one person
dies every week while on the
transplantation waiting list.

A woman came home, screeching her car
into the driveway, and ran into the
house. She slammed the door and shouted
at the top of her lungs, Honey,
pack your bags. I won the lottery

The husband said, Oh my God
! What should I pack, beach
stuff or mountain stuff ?. Doesnt
Matter, she said. JUST GET

If you had the chance to re-live
the last 10 years of your life how would
you re-live them?: Would not
change a thing.
Best and Worst moments of
your career: Best watching
patients recover from
Lung Transplant and seeing them leave
hospital looking healthier than us.
Worst, losing patients I have gotten to
know well.
Have you been through any
funny/embarrassing situations/:
Almost every day at work we manage to
have a laugh together, which is what
makes Ward 5E such a fun and rewarding
place to work.

| THE
BEST BLONDE JOKE OF THE YEAR
SO FAR : A man
was in his front yard mowing
grass when his attractive blonde
female neighbour came out of the
house and went straight to the
mail box.
She opened it then slammed it
shut and stormed back into the
house. A little later she came
out of her house again went to
the mail box and again
opened it, slammed it shut
again. Angrily, back into the
house she went. As the was man
was getting ready to edge the
lawn, here she came out again,
marched to the mail box, opened
it and then slammed it closed
harder than ever. Puzzled by her
actions the man asked her, Is
something wrong? To which she
replied, There certainly is!
(Are you ready? This is a
beauty)
My stupid computer keeps saying,
YOUVE GOT MAIL!
