Professor Gregory Snell
Name: Greg Snell
Born: Valentines Day, 1958
Marital Status: Married with 3 children
How long at The Alfred: Started at the Alfred in 1987 doing Cardiology training! Ultimately started Respiratory training at the Alfred in 1990 and other than some transplant training in Canada in 1991 and 1992, I have been here ever since.
What is your position? Medical Head of the Lung Transplant Service here at The Alfred
Career History: Trained at the Repatriation Hospital & Alfred Hospital in Respiratory Medicine. Trained in Toronto, Canada in Lung Transplantation.
Career Hope: My big hope would be that we would solve
the problem of chronic rejection, increase the number of transplants and
that once surgery is over the transplanted organ lasts forever.
My alternative to this is that we have an unlimited supply of
transplantable organs that we can either grow, or use from animals, and
that these last forever. Finally I hope that the patients and staff live
long happy lives.
Career Highlights: Returning from Canada in 1992 to work with Trevor Williams and Don Esmore. Performing our first Donation after Cardiac Death Lung Transplant, after years of theoretical work behind the scenes, and seeing it successful in 2006. Talking at my 10yr old daughter’s school recently and having the first 2 questions asked of me by the children “what did I think of the Opt-Out” rule? And “What can be done to provide more organs for transplantation?” It seems that we are educating the next generation!
Favourite Things: Sailing, Skiing and the company of good friends.
Who are my current champions? Steve Peuschel - Steve is recipient of a double lung transplant who many of you know, and his direct, hard work and his influential contacts behind the scenes have made a major difference to successful transplantation of lungs here at the Alfred. I am sure we will hear more of Steve in his new role with the Zaidee Foundation promoting organ donation.
Ed Note: Greg Snell has recently been made a full Professor by Monash University
